Dental implant use in the posterior maxilla (back portion of the upper jaw) may require bone graft placement into the sinus cavity (hollow air space) overlying the molars and premolars.  Sinus augmentation involves surgical placement of bone graft materials into the sinus cavity prior to or at the same time that dental implants are placed to replace missing teeth.  This procedure has become very predictable in the last several years, and has allowed for more extensive use of dental implants with better long-term success rates and survival of dental implants placed in this region of the mouth.
