Also referred to as a gingivectomy, crown lengthening is a fairly conservative periodontal treatment that can correct many oral problems faced by our patients. Crown lengthening reshapes the gum line to add length to your teeth and treat some dental health issues.

The need for a gingivectomy can often arise from gum disease if the condition has resulted in “pockets” that formed between your teeth and gums. Bacteria can easily accumulate in these pockets and cause further irritation to your gums, but performing a crown lengthening procedure can reduce the depth of the pockets and make treatments more effective.

You may also wish to undergo crown lengthening for cosmetic purposes if you have a “gummy smile,” or a gum line that covers the majority of your teeth. Our periodontist can reshape the gums to reveal more of your teeth and enhance your smile’s appearance.

Dr. James R. Knochel may also suggest we lengthen the teeth if you are in need of a restorative treatment, but the restoration would be blocked by too much gum tissue around the tooth. If this is the case, we can trim the gums to better accommodate the restoration.
